Abstract

The stability of two phenytoin sodium intravenous preparations in 0.9% sodium chloride was compared. Solutions of phenytoin sodium 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7§·/§¢ were prepared by addly Phenytion A & B to 0.9% Sodium chloride injection. 15 sets of samples were prepared in 20§¢ glass vials which were seald. Macroscopic & microscopic observations were made immediately and at various times up to 4 hours. Phenytoin concentration was measured spectrophotometrically immediately after admixture and at 0.5, 1, 2.5 & 4 hours. Percent phenytoin crystallization based on initial concentration was calculated. Percent phenytoin crystallization was greater for phenytoin B compared with phenytoin A. It is concluded that phenytoin B is more suitable drugs for the intravenous administration.
